Cult TV shows 3

(As Robert Plant sang, "it's been a long time..." anyway, on with the show!)

Doctor Who: thanks to last year's comeback starring Christopher Eccleston, The Doctor and co. are as cool as ever. The new series with David Tennant is looking very promising too. For those not familiar with the show, it's a sci-fi series that has been running, on and off, since the 1960s when everything was in black and white. The Doctor is a Timelord who travels through space and time in a machine called the TARDIS with his assistant, to fight evil. Every now and then he "regenerates", and is played by a different actor. Each time he changes a bit (in personality as well as in looks) but still has the same powers and memories and still is the good guy (yay!). David is the 10th Doctor and is said to be staying for at least another series - hooray! I love this guy and i love this show. It's also famous for a race of alien bad guys called the Daleks. They're great if you're going to a fancy dress party on a budget, you can make your own Dalek costume at home using a kitchen plunger and lots of tinfoil...

Fun House (UK version): one of the best kids' TV shows ever! In these days of childhood obesity, maybe it would be good to bring Fun House back to motive kids to run around looking for stuff and dodging gunge. Or it might make them couch potatoes. Anyway. Fun House was a kids' game show in which you had to complete challenges to win prizes - obstacle races, searching for stuff, go-kart racing, getting gunged, etc. and in the end the winning team could search the house for tags that could be exchanged for prizes. It really did look like fun and i would have loved to play it. It has a cult following on Mega-zine.

Look Around You: 2 series of this show were shown on BBC2. The first series spoofed the old retro science videos we were shown at school (1970s/80s i think) - it was silly, funny, and very accurate. I haven't seen much of the second series but i think it was different, sending up 1970s/80s science shows like Tomorrow's World instead. I managed to get a DVD of the first series a couple of weeks ago: it includes every "module" (episode), an "advanced double-length module" (a bonus double-length episode, about Calcium), and the full-length music video for the "Little Mouse" song from the "Music" episode. If you watched those retro videos at school (you'll know the type if you've watched them), you'll love this show.

Cult TV 2

long time no see on this blog, sorry, been busy. anyhow here's some more "cult tv"...
the simpsons - an obvious candidate, altho it is now so well known and popular that it's arguable not really "cult" any more, more like mainstream, altho it does keep quite dark and satirical so it isnt really mainstream in the nice, cosy sort of way.
have i got news for you - a brilliant programme based around a news quiz. 2 teams battle it out while providing a humourous look at the week's news. each team consists of either ian hislop or paul merton, plus one guest (different guests every week), and the quiz used to be presented and chaired by angus deaton, but he was sacked from the BBC for snorting cocaine with a hooker. since then there has been a different guest presenter every week, including former Tory leader william hague (the only tory (that means conservative party, for any confused americans reading this and thinking im talking about tori amos or something) who i've ever actually liked), and sports commentator des lynam (good ol' "smooth des", who lives near me, apparently. i have never seen him, but some of mum's work colleagues met him once and had their photos taken with him.)
little britain - yes it may be overrated, but it has spawned many catchphrases including "im the only gay in the village", "i want that one", "you know too much", "yeah but no but yeah but no but..." and "im a lady!" Hear these being quoted in a school playground near you...
futurama - also created by the mighty matt groening (the man behind the simpsons) - altho not as good as the famous yellow ones, futurama ain't bad either.
oh yeah, a few weeks (or months) ago (i think it was about the beginning of May, when a new DVD shop opened in town) i got 2 dvds of the wonderful not the nine o'clock news - brilliant!

80s Mullets

On Friday we watched a psychology video at school, and it was an old one - they are always fun, we just laugh at the bad graphics/clothes/haircuts/etc. This vid was 80s and american, featuring many terrible mullets. i hadn't realised before just how many people actually had mullets - there were so many of them in this vid! amusing.

Cult TV Shows

a few tv shows that i think qualify as "cult"...

red dwarf obviously a great one to start with, it's said to be BBC2's most-watched sitcom ever. its a like "the hitch-hiker's guide to tge galaxy" as it's a sci-fi comedy featuring the last human in the universe. in red dwarf the last human is Lister (played by craig charles), who likes curry & lager and playing guitar. he's on a spaceship with Kryten (the excellent robert llewellyn), a robot; Cat, a half-cat, half-human mutant; Rimmer, a hologram of another human; plus other characters such as Holly, the ship's computer, and an alien being called the Polymorph. the swearword commonly used on this show is "smeg", which now seems to have its own cult following.

restoration strangely enough, this modern history programme is actually cool. for a start is presented by griff rhys jones, who is cool, cos he used to be on...

not the nine o'clock news one of the funniest sketch shows ever! ran during the thatcher years and made names of many young comedians - not just GRJ above but also rowan atkinson, better known to the world as Mr Bean!

young, gifted and broke late-night talent show on ITV presented by Magenta DeVine (the black lady with huuuge sunglasses! and cocktails! she was cool!). they featured all kinds of talent - not just obvious talent-show stuff like music and stand-up comedy, but also fashion designers and film-makers.

...right that's it for now, might post more later...

Cult TV Shows

the latest "cult" stuff that i'm gonna be posting here soon will be all about cult TV: the simpsons, red dwarf, etc. (once ive found the time). these programmes beat organised religion for sure! (altho some really over-enthusiastic types (e.g. extreme Trekkies) scare me a little bit in their incredible adoration.)
